The Waiting City
(M), Roadshow Entertainment
There is one big thing missing from the lives of Fiona and Ben Simmons - a child.
While Ben (Joel Edgerton) is a somewhat struggling musician, Fiona (Radha Mitchell) is a successful lawyer and the couple appear outwardly happy. They just need to complete their family.
An
opportunity arises to adopt an Indian child and so their journey begins from Australia, an adventure which is set to test their relationship and its future.
Finding themselves in the hot, steamy, overcrowded streets of Calcutta, the couple find different ways to deal with their time as they agonise through the Indian adoption process.
They are forced to confront their demons and insecurities and ask themselves: Is a baby what we really want?
Helping them to come to grips with what is going on around them is their room servant, Krishna (Samrat Chakrabarti).
Despite his less than perfect life, he has an inner peace about him and he helps the couple better understand the country and the culture their child was brought up in.
Waiting City offers us a breathtaking look into life in a huge Indian city - with its mesmerising sights and cacophony of sounds that are its lifeblood.
And we get to watch on as an Aussie couple deal with a slow and complicated process, and their own issues, as they attempt to fulfil their dream.
