A biodegradable cardboard pet casket product will allow families and children to give their beloved pets the send-off they deserve.

Jane Bogust and her husband Mat of Rest In Pets have created the range of pet caskets and urns, which have been specially designed in New Zealand. "Young children especially can find it tough to understand when their pet dies and saying goodbye can be very difficult, stressful and sad," says Mat.

Where did this idea arise from?

One of our friends had stuffed their guinea pig into an old tea box to bury it. Not very dignified. We knew that we could create something more meaningful.

Kids and families. It assists the child to deal with the grieving process and offers the parents the tools to help.

What are your products made of?

Cardboard, specifically: Caskets - E Flute corrugated, Wallets (outer package) - B Flute corrugated, Urn - 500Micron cardboard.

What pets can they accommodate?

Small: mice, budgies, small rats, fish etc. Medium: guinea pigs, large rats, small rabbits etc. Large: cats, large rabbits, some small dogs etc. Urn: ashes.

Is this suitable for the backyard "cemetery"?

Yes, very much so. It's to create an experience around and celebrate the life of a valued family member.

What was your first pet?

A female rat called Pebbles. She was so cool -- an explorer! I still remember her to this day.

As a kid did you hold ceremonies at the passing of your pets?

Yes, I remember my dad digging a hole and I put Pebbles in an old tin can with a letter.

Have you any pets now?

Not at present - though our children will have a small pet soon.

What do you hope your product will achieve for families?

An option to have an affordable yet quality/useful item for farewelling a beloved pet with dignity and style.
