Devo - Something for Everybody
3/5
Back in the 70s and early 80s when silly outfits and robot voices were de rigueur, Devo were kings.
Their distinctive synth-heavy music and techno-geek lyrics, best realised in their 1978 art-rock classic Q. Are We Not Men? A. We Are Devo!, gained them a cult
following and gave them an edge over the rest of the New Wave brigade. Well times have changed, but, if Something for Everybody is anything to go by, Devo have not.
The album, their first in two decades, is packed full of trademark Space-Invader sound effects, jerky pop melodies and megaphone vocals.
And, strangely enough, the formula still works. Sure, the lyrics are ridiculous, but they are delivered with the wry irony that's always made the band so entertaining.
And with a new generation salivating over anything and everything 80s, there really could be something for everyone on this surprisingly decent album.
