This second album from English trio White Lies belongs squarely in that camp already occupied by Editors and, to a lesser extent, Interpol.
It's not only the similar Ian Curtis vocal style, but the post-punk, indie rock, verging on new romantic sound they share.
With a serious synth element to the music, this could be from the early 1980s. At times, while listening to this album, I kept expecting to see Midge Ure running around the darkened streets of Vienna.
They're all very serious bands but somehow White Lies, who argue they have a very uplifting sound (it must be all those violins), actually seem that much more depressing than Editors or Interpol.
But that doesn't mean it's not a good listen - especially the powerfully emotional Turn the Bells and the anthemic single, Bigger Than Us.
