Pistol Youth - My Own Private Amsterdam
4.5/5
It's about time we had a decent 90s revival.
If you heard the new Weezer song on the radio the other day, thinking, "Hey, that's not bad" - it probably wasn't Weezer.
It was probably these guys.
Pistol Youth were formed by Steriogram's Brad Carter as
a bit of an experiment. Comprising members living in four different countries including two Kiwis (Carter, living in LA but from Whangarei and Tauranga's Gavin Kerr), the band recorded an EP across the internet before gathering to record this album.
They may bring various influences to the project, but most seem informed by 90s grunge and post-grunge, like Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, even a little Dinosaur Jr, though they're probably a lot more pop than any of those.
On Problematic, they even namecheck a couple of Jane's Addiction tracks: "Jane Says Been Caught Stealing".
There are plenty of highlights, including When I Go Out (which so could be Weezer), Frankfurt and Symphony Brother.
Well worth checking out, especially for those who left their hair in the 90s like me.
