Going Back - Phil Collins
1/5
A television talent show judge listening to this album would probably say: "These are great songs, Phil, but they're just not the right songs for you."
With a base of Motown classics such at Heatwave, Uptight and Standing in the Shadows of Love, Collins seems to be following one of those fail-proof recipes.
But he doesn't turn the heat up high enough and the result is somewhat soggy.
You can't fault his professionalism and the finished quality of the recordings, but Going Back lacks the emotion and star quality of the original artists.
Collins may have launched his solo career on the back of his cover of the Supreme's Can't Hurry Love, but the pop-soul combination fails to fire this time around.
