Bold as Brass - Cliff Richard
4/5
There is nothing original about this album. The songs are all well-trodden covers Richard has been recording for about half a century - yet it does work.
Celebrating his 70th birthday, Richard takes a step back to the jazz/swing era on Bold as Brass and he
proves he can still hold his own against the younger generation of Jamie Callum wannabes.
His voice is strong and perfectly suited to this genre, injecting an uncommon level of energy into classics such as I've Got You Under My Skin and Accentuate the Positive. Backed by a range of instruments, including the brass section alluded to in the title, Richard can croon with the best of them.
Highlights include a sassy version of Lazy River and surprisingly saucy I Just Want to Make Love to You.
Peter Pan meets lounge lizard is an effective combination.
