A retirement village in Maungatapere is to reopen this month under new ownership.

Kamo Home and Village bought the former Mountain View Retirement Home premises at Maungatapere late last year after it closed in mid-2016 when the owners decided to shut the doors of Mountain View citing commercial and safety reasons.

Kamo Home and Village plans to reopen on February 27 with certification for 20 beds and keeping the current name. General manager Zoe Berry said they are just waiting on final Ministry of Health confirmation.

She said the purchase of Mountain View by Kamo Home and Village was in keeping with long-term plans of the Kamo Home and Village charitable trust.

"The trust reviewed and updated the strategic plan in 2015 with intentions to grow our services," Ms Berry said.

"We envisaged this growth would be on site at Kamo Home and Village. However, after analysing the alternative options of purchasing an additional facility the decision to purchase MV [Mountain View] was made.

"MV became ours in October and we are nearing completion of an extensive upgrade of the premises. MV will be managed by the current management team at KHV," Ms Berry said.

She said there are no plans to extend the facility.

"It's pretty much at capacity for the land that it sits on and we also want to retain the home-like environment that a small boutique facility such as MV provides," she said.

Some of the previous residents had inquired about returning, Ms Berry said.

They would be talking through the option to return to MV with residents and their families.

"We do, however, intend to expand our links with the Maungatapere and surrounding communities."

The plan is to reopen on February 27 with an official opening by the mayor on March 24 at 4pm.

The Northland District Health Board welcomes Mountain View's reopening.

"From a Northland DHB perspective we view the reopening of this rest home as a positive step in helping to maintain the availability of beds and choices for Northland's population," said Neil Beney, general manager Medicine, Health of Older People, Emergency and Clinical Support.

Ms Berry said the purchase sits well with the Kamo Village's business plan and philosophy - growth and a commitment to providing quality aged care across a continuum of levels of care.

"Although our first line of thought was that it is best to provide all levels of care within the same facility, our thought pattern in relation to this concept has changed.

"There is a huge difference between the needs of rest home-level clients and hospital-level clients, particularly from an activities and lifestyle perspective.

"We hope that by offering a rest home-only service that we can create an environment where we can fully concentrate on a model of care that sees the residents being part of a household that supports each other to live an optimal and fulfilled life," she said.

"To ensure transition to higher level of cares when required is smooth, MV will be very much a part of Kamo Home and we envisage residents from both MV and KH spending time at both facilities."
