The many fans of the breads Agnes Borrmann and Mark Schmid make and sell personally at Whangarei businesses had just one question when the couple said they were setting up a cafe in the former Bogarts Pizza building with family members: "What about the bread?"

The answer is that bread sales direct into businesses will continue but as order deliveries only, rather than including a selection in the daily run around businesses for "spot" sales. The breads, along with pizza and cafe food, will also form an integral part of La Familia Cafe.

Ms Borrmann said the venture was combined bakery, cafe and deli. As much as possible would be sourced locally and made on-site. She was formerly an administrator and her husband is a chef and pastrycook. Originally from Germany and latterly Auckland, they had holidayed in the north for several years but it had taken time to "figure out how to make our living here".

The breads had been so well-received that they had started looking for a CBD location for a cafe and bakery business, along with pizza, one of Mark Schmid's specialities. La Familia will open shortly before Christmas and be open Monday-Friday 8am-5pm, also Saturday but closing an hour or so earlier.
