Whanganui's newest dog groomer has wheels.

CamDogs owner Cameron Young has been grooming dogs for about eight months and on September 27 started operating his mobile service.

Young previously worked in bars and as a foreman for Fulton Hogan in Australia but a major health issue forced him to look for less physically demanding work.

"My father suggested dog grooming to me years ago," Young said.

"When I got diagnosed with chronic heart failure and couldn't do the usual physical kind of work, I decided to give it a go."

Young studied for a diploma in dog grooming and a certificate in pet care and health through The Career Academy, a course that took about nine months.

After initially working at his home, he now has a mobile trailer and travels to clients' homes.

"There was a position in the market. All the groomers are so busy around here so adding another one wasn't going to hurt anybody."

Young designed his mobile grooming trailer which was built by Wozzo at Trailer King in Whanganui.

He has installed a dentist's chair in the trailer so he can easily move dogs to the right height for grooming without having to lift them himself.

"To my knowledge, there's nothing like this trailer in New Zealand," Young said.

"The nearest mobile groomer is in New Plymouth and they have a van. My trailer is fully self-sufficient. It has a generator so I don't use anyone's power. All the products I use are biodegradable and eco-friendly.

"The service I offer is good for elderly people who may not be able to get out or people who are working. I can just go to their place to groom their dog.

"The interest has been good. The trailer gets a lot of looks when I'm driving around.

"I love dogs. I'm more than happy to groom any dog as long as they aren't aggressive."

As well as covering the Whanganui area, Young has regular clients in Waverley and Patea and has people from Ohakune travelling to Whanganui to get their dogs groomed.
