Taitoko School boys are getting fitter, thanks to the Levin South Neighbourhood Policing Team which implemented a fitness programme at the school aimed at building trust within the community.
Constable Lance Moretto, Constable Andrew Collis, Senior Constable Nathan Daly and Sergeant Ian Pigott make up the current Levin South Neighbourhood Policing Team that has been working with Taitoko School to build a strong relationship between the two over a number of years.
Constable Collis said it was about breaking down barriers and preconceptions.
"We are not the bad guys. We want the kids to see this and trust us," said Collis.
"In the short time we have been doing the [fitness] programme we have noticed huge positive changes. "The boys are more attentive, respectful and polite."
Student Sione Aholoka, 12, said it has changed his thinking about police officers.
"I didn't think cops cared about us, now I know they care for our school and community," he said.
Teacher Hamish Paterson said the programme helps teach the kids about fitness.
"Their attitude towards exercise and running has changed. Some struggle but push through and gain a sense of achievement," Paterson said.
"It's about relationship building, respect and teamwork."
Noah Watters, 11, said it helps keep him fit and motivates him to bike to school more.
"I can now run a whole lap of the field. Before I wasn't able to run a length."
Taitoko School principal Rachael King said the programme was exciting for the kids. "They get to build their social skills and are empowered with confidence."
