Take a look at the sports results in yesterday's edition of Hawke's Bay Today.
You will notice Colin Slade had a two during Saturday's play at the Waipukurau Golf Club. No, the All Black first five-eighth didn't sneak up to Waipukurau on the day before his Rugby World Cup match against Canada in the capital.
This Slade is an ex-Porangahau and Waipukurau High School Old Boys loose forward who also played sub-union rugby for Central in the 1960s.
He is no relation to the under pressure All Black but admitted he had copped a bit of flak from his golfing buddies about having the same name.
"It's all good fun," said Slade who plays off a 16 handicap and is confident the younger Slade will improve on his performance against Canada.
"He'll come right ... he just needs more time in the saddle," said Slade who has lived in Waipukurau for 12 years since moving from Porangahau where he worked in the faults department for the old power board.
Former teammates of Slade remember him as a "tough red head who didn't stand any nonsense".
With this in mind, your's truly didn't push the issue when Slade declined the opportunity to have his photo taken yesterday. "I prefer to keep a low profile," he said.
It's probably a wise move in case his prediction of the younger Slade coming right proves incorrect.
Fortunately one of his former teammates was able to track down a team photo he was in so we could at least use an old photo of him. We won't mention who the teammate was in case Slade seeks some revenge.
Like his former teammate said "this Colin Slade was a tough customer".
Needless to say all New Zealand rugby fans are hoping the younger Colin Slade, who turns 24 on Monday, can toughen up and help the All Blacks achieve World Cup glory. It appears he is still concerned about his jaw, which was broken twice this year, receiving another knock.
Who can blame him? Any team hoping to beat the ABs will target the jaw if there's an opportunity.
