The inaugural Backyard Summerfest was held on Saturday at the Waikoko Gardens in the Hawke's Bay Showgrounds. The new festival for Hawke's Bay captures some of the great Kiwi summer traditions, including a backyard cricket competition. Photographer Glenn Taylor joined the fun and games.

More than 7000 spectators attended each of the two nights of the New Zealand Superstock Championship at Meeanee during the weekend. Home crowd favourite Shane Penn retained his title. Two other Palmerston North-contracted drivers, Jordan Dare and Greame Barr, were second and third respectively. Glenn Taylor captured the action both nights.

For more than 70 years children have paraded their lambs and calves at the showgrounds, taking part in the Town and Country day. Christine McKay caught all the action.
They huffed and they puffed as they swam, cycled and ran across the 2013 IronMaori course in and around Napier on Saturday. For the 600 youngsters in Friday's Tamariki Rangatahi and the 2500 adults who took part in the big half-triathlon the following day it was a sense of pride when they crossed the line. Hundreds of friends and family saw them start and finish and along the way kept the calls of encouragement kept coming. "It was a really great day,'' creator and co-organiser Heather Skipworth said. Santas of all shapes and sizes took to High Street for Dannevirke's Christmas parade on Saturday.There were floats, elves and animals to delight spectators who came out in their droves, while businesses offered extended opening hours to draw people in after the excitement had died down. The weather gods shined down on those participating in the 2013 Bike Fest event at Havelock North Domain on Saturday. The family event started and finished at the Village Green (Havelock North Domain) and the ride took place over a 6km route. There were also spot prizes and a bike prize on offer. Those attending were encouraged to bring a picnic, or money to enjoy the sausage sizzle, cupcakes by Bonnie Cakes, coffee, and Turkish kebabs. The sun shone down on the Mitre10 Megawalk at the weekend, with temperatures reaching 22 degrees in the middle of the day. The 28km Mega run or walk began in Hastings at Mitre10 Mega and ended in the carpark of Mitre10 Mega in Napier. There were events for all abilities including a 15km run or walk, a 6.5km walk and a 3.5km walk. Hawke's Bay Today photographer Paul Taylor was there to capture the action.
Havelock North Primary School wrapped up their 150th jubilee celebrations yesterday with a interdenominational service and plaque unveiling, but Saturday was cake cutting day for the school, which opened in 1863. Chief photographer Warren Buckland was there to see the school's oldest living ex-pupil Carol Leedon, 98, cut the cake with Zoe Driscoll, 5, the youngest current student.
The gloved-up and helmeted combatants were revved up and raring to go for the opening meeting of the speedway season staged at Meeanee Speedway on Saturday evening. The weather was kind, although the wind kicked up a bit of dust now and then, but the watering-truck teams ensured the surface was as good as it could get. There was some willing driving and riding, and along with the thrills there were a few spills as a couple of the stock-car pilots decided to carry out on-track tests of their roofs and rollbars. Above all there was plenty of oohing and ahhing, and cheering, with many of those who turned up to watch reckoning it was one of the best openings they had seen to what is set to be a great season. The annual Gypsy Fair was held on Saturday at the Havelock North Domain where people could shop for creative and fun things, while also enjoying the activities set out around the park. Diwali is an Indian festival which signifies the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness. Hawke's Bay's Multicultural Association in collaboration with the Indian community celebrated at the Sound Shell in Napier on Saturday. The Spring Racing Carnival was held on Saturday at the Hawke's Bay Racecourse. Hundreds of punters came out to enjoy a day of racing, fashion and sun. The big race was taken out by a horse called Ransomed, whose team collected the grand prize of $156,000. Hawke's Bay Today photographer Paul Taylor captured all the race day action.

Hastings District Council renamed and redeveloped the former Clive Ski Reserve to recognise the sporting achievements of double Olympic gold medallists, twin sisters Caroline Meyer and Georgina Earl (nee Evers- Swindell). The two Hastings women now live in the South Island but in a video message, said they were honoured to have the park renamed the Evers-Swindell Reserve. The site is next to the Clive River and opposite the Hawke's Bay Rowing Club where they spent many hours training to become rowing champions. Warren Buckland took the photos.
