It was a sports and fun day for young and old and for folk from town and country at the Elsthorpe Sports Day. Horse events, show hunter events, golf and dog trialling took place at the Elsthorpe Sports Grounds off Kahuranaki Rd and drew a good number of visitors - many taking advantage of the great weather to have a picnic while watching the action. Hawke’s Bay’s four surf lifesaving clubs — Westshore, Pacific, Ocean Beach Kiwi and hosts Waimarama — were among the 14 represented at the Central Region Championship on Saturday. Hawke’s Bay Rowing Club members dominated their club’s annual New Year’s regatta raced on the Clive River during Friday and Saturday. The host club recorded 103 points while nearest rivals Aramoho, of Wanganui, finished with 54. Chief photographer Warren Buckland was among the spectators.

Hundreds turned out to enjoy the annual Black Barn open air cinema on Saturday, December 27. The Dark Horse screened yesterday and will run until tomorrow, before returning on Friday until January 6. Photographer Paul Taylor was there.

It was a weekend for markets with the Bay View Christmas Market also taking place north of Napier on Saturday at the Petane Domain. Photographer Duncan Brown also found a couple of local leaders taking part in the silly season fun.

The countdown to the 6th IronMaori in Napier next month has begun with the IronMaori Quarter Ironman, held in Napier on Saturday. The event, part of what is now a string of events in New Zealand and Australia initiated by the founding of IronMaori in Napier in 2009, attracted well over 1000 competitors. Among those watching yesterday was Hawke’s Bay Today photographer Duncan Brown.
The ultimate obstacle course, the Mud and Guts Challenge, took place with much merriment yesterday. Photographer Glenn Taylor was at the hardcore event on McVicar Rd, in rural Napier.

More than 700 Anglican parishioners and wellwishers crowded into St John Cathedral in Napier on Saturday to celebrate the ordination of Andrew Hedge as the 16th Bishop of Waiapu. About 20 bishops, along with supporters from Bishop Andrew’s former parish in Cambridge, were among those who attended the service.

Eight teams went head-to-head over three days this weekend during the fifth NZ Football Futsal National League, held at Napier's Pettigrew Green Arena. Futsal is a Fifa-approved version of five-a-side indoor football. Photographer Duncan Brown was there to capture all the action, thrills and a few spills on Saturday.
St Andrew’s Church, Hastings, came alive with costumed churchgoers on Saturday, celebrating the church’s 125-year anniversary. A pageant showcased the church's rich history. Chief photographer Warren Buckland was there.
It wasn’t pretty but the Hawke’s Bay Magpies rugby team locked the Ranfurly Shield away for the summer when first five-eighth Ihaia West kicked an 80th minute dropped goal to secure a 20-all draw with Southland at Napier’s McLean Park on Saturday night. This was the Hawke’s Bay union’s 51st defence of the shield and saw the Magpies move up to third equal place with Waikato in tenure wins. Photographer Duncan Brown was among the 11,500 spectators.
