A 50-year-old man is in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Hawke's Bay Hospital after his motorbike and a tractor collided on Mangaroa Rd yesterday morning.
The man was on his way to work at Hawke's Bay Prison around 7.30am when the accident occurred.
"He was heading west, following behind the tractor when it turned into Mangaroa Cemetery," Constable Darryn Waugh said.
"The tractor had a mower on the back and as it turned [the motorcyclist] commenced an overtaking manoeuvre. He misjudged and hit the grass-cutting implement hard and bounced back off his bike."
The 50-year-old motorcyclist was taken by ambulance to the hospital emergency department.
There he was assessed for fractures to both his arms, as well as back and neck injuries.
"As far as we can tell his injuries are significant - it's a lot worse than we originally thought," Mr Waugh said.
