GISBORNE’S Matt Scott has moved a stroke closer to qualifying for the world open water championships in winning the New Zealand men’s 10-kilometre title in Taupo on Saturday.
The Enterprise Cars Swim Team member won a sprint finish after the top three cleared away from the pack early in the
race.
Scott, 19, won in a time of 2 hours 21 seconds, with New Plymouth’s Troy Balvert six seconds back in second and Aucklander Sebastien Priscott another second adrift in third.
Scott said he had been doing speed work at training so he was confident he could finish strongly over the last 200 metres.
“The goal was to win it and to do it as comfortably as I could, so as soon as we got that group of three I was happy just to sit there and not do much until the end.”
