Mount Maunganui kept hold of the overall points trophy with a string of impressive relay and team results, finishing on 169 points. East End from Taranaki had 95, Red Beach 57, Mairangi Bay 56 and Kaiaponi Farms Waikanae 55.
With East End being an out-of-region club, Waikanae finished fourth overall in the region.
Dawson Building Midway had a team of two dozen there, and they managed seventh overall, and sixth in the region, on 40 points.
Waikanae athletes collected nine gold medals, along with silver and bronze.
“We had some really good results with a few standout performances,” said Waikanae head coach Cory Hutchings.
“Oska Smith was fantastic in winning both the open and under-19 beach sprints, along with another gold in the u19 beach flags and a silver in the open flags.
“Briana Irving was as dominant as ever, taking out the open women's beach sprint and flags.
“In the water, Summer Rolston was fantastic too. She won the u19 ironwoman title.
“Lachie Falloon paddled well to win the u19 board race.”
The Waikanae u19 men's board relay team of Falloon, Jack Keepa and Jonty Evans won the gold medal. Rolston and Chloe Kapene won the silver in the u19 women's board rescue.
The u19 men also won the ski relay.
Taran Wilson won silver in the u15 ski, Christy Tate won silver in the open women's ski, and the u19 men took bronze in the beach relay.
Kapene and Rolston teamed up with Riley Ingoe to win bronze in the u19 women's board relay.
“It was pleasing to have some great team performances across the weekend,” Hutchings said.
“Thank you to Surf Life Saving New Zealand's eastern region sports manager Sonia Keepa from Gisborne and her team for putting this event on and keeping it going in such challenging conditions.”
Hutchings raced on the ski in the Waikanae open taplin relay team (two swim, two board, two ski) who finished a creditable seventh in the final.
Midway's athletes came home with gold medals to Jack Lepper in the u17 men's board; to Lepper, Yahni Brown and Tyron Evans in the u17 board relay; and to Evans in the u17 surf race.
Golds also went to their u17 taplin team of Evans (swim), Brown (board) and Lepper (ski). The Midway B team were third.
Gold medals also went to their u17 women's ski relay team of Sophie Petro, Hannah Webb and Jacqueline Kennedy.
In the u15 ski, Kennedy won gold and Ella Sutton, silver.
Petro won silver in the u17 women's ski.
Midway's other placings included a silver in the u17 ski relay, a silver to Jonty Evans and a bronze to Lepper in the u17 ironman, and a silver to Ella Sutton in the u15 women's board race.
“It was not ideal racing on the flat conditions of Pilot Bay, but the kids really impressed me,” said Midway head coach Jack Gavin.
“The results our members got were pretty amazing, given those flat conditions, when they have been training in not much less than a metre of surf for most of the season.
“So fitness is obviously at a great level heading towards the nationals in Christchurch in March.”
Riversun Wainui did not compete at the eastern region carnival this year.
