THE David Nathan helmed V5 was literally sailing away late this afternoon from the rest of the field in the reborn Auckland to Gisborne yacht race.
The other six boats in the field were struggling to get around the tip of the Coromandel Peninsula in very light wind.
Nathan and
V5 were a third of the way down the eastern side of the peninsula by late afternoon.
V5 made better going around the top of the peninsula with a more inshore line and has accelerated away once she got round into the Bay of Plenty.
The race leader was the favourite to take line honours some time tomorrow.
