GISBORNE 12-year-old Tyler Finau came away from a regional swimming meet last weekend with nine wins and five Hawke’s Bay/Poverty Bay records. Enterprise Cars Swim Team member Tyler won her age-group races in the 100-metre, 200m and 400m freestyle, 50m and 200m backstroke, 100m and 200m butterfly, and the 200m and 400m individual medley.

She set HBPB records in the 200m and 400m free, the 200m fly, and 200m and 400m IM.

Tyler and other Gisborne swimmers were taking part in the New Zealand Junior Festival Swimming Competition. This event — held at four venues around the country — provides national competition for swimmers aged 12 and under, for the same age-group served by a different format in what used to be the New Zealand junior nationals.

Hawke’s Bay/Poverty Bay swimmers are in the Aquaknights region, along with swimmers from Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Taranaki. The Aquaknights meet was held in Rotorua at the same time as meets for the other regions. The other region names are the Harlequins (for the area north of Waikato), the All Stars (for the southern North Island), and the Makos (for the South Island).

Each region held its own meet last weekend. Results relate to the regional meets, but a computer programme called Meet Mobile enables simultaneous performances from all the meets to be compared. A points system called Take Your Marks will rank all the swimmers nationally.
