Hamilton, Bay of Plenty Coastlands and Counties Manukau were the unbeaten teams on day one of two Twenty20 fixtures in the Northern Districts Senior Secondary Schoolboys tournament that started in Gisborne yesterday.

Poverty Bay suffered two losses, going down to Bay of Plenty Lakelands in the morning, then losing to Counties Manukau in the afternoon.

The defeats left Poverty Bay bottom of pool B. They play Northland in a 50-overs game today.

Batting first against BOP Lakelands, Poverty Bay were dismissed for 118, with Angus Orsler and Sam Patterson scoring 28 and 27. Bay of Plenty Lakelands bowler Jarrod Mealings produced the best figures of the day, 4-1.

Despite a great spell of bowling from Paul Stewart, who took four wickets for five runs and Patterson, 2-20 — Lakelands reached their target with one wicket in hand, 127-9

Poverty Bay took first dig against Counties, who lead the pool with two wins, but were restricted to 85-8. Drew Scott scored an unbeaten 32. His Gisborne Boys’ High School teammate Matt McNeill chipped in with 20. But it was a game in which the Counties bowlers, particularly Marcel Marconi, who finished with 4-17, took the honours. Counties were untroubled in scoring 85 for the loss of three wickets.

Hamilton’s Corey Townsend scored the first and, to date, only century of the tournament. His unbeaten 103 against the Northern Districts Invitation team came off 66 balls and included one six and 13 fours as Hamilton cruised to an eight-wicket win.
