CAMPION College completed a football treble and Gisborne Girls' High School netballers won promotion in a great week for Gisborne school sport.

Campion won the Grant Jarvis Tournament in Palmerston North, winning all eight of their games, scoring 47 goals and conceding one (in a 12-1 victory).

Gisborne Girls' High School netballers were also unbeaten in the C Grade of the Upper North Island Secondary Schools Tournament in Howick, Auckland, and will play in the B Grade next year.

The Campion girls' triumph completes a remarkable year in which they won the Women's Eastern League for the first time and won the Braybrook Cup knockout competition.

It brings to an end an era in Campion girls' football, as many of the girls head off to university next year and Phil Allan ends his nine-year tenure as coach.

His daughter Lucy was team captain and is among those heading off to university. Another daughter, Bree, four years older than Lucy, also played for Campion and is already at university.

The tournament drew 23 teams from areas that included Hawkes Bay, Wellington, Whanganui and Palmerston North.

In pool play, Campion beat Samuel Marsden Collegiate 2-0, Karamu 6-0, Havelock North 3-0, Tararua 12-1 and Inglewood 12-0. In the quarterfinals they beat Iona 5-0, in the semifinals they beat Onslow 3-0 and in the final, Woodford 4-0.

Sofia Zame was Campion's top scorer in the tournament, with 15 goals, and was second in the “golden boot” competition for goalscoring.

The highlights were many and varied. Dara Mulrooney scored direct from a corner kick; goalkeeper Kat Vanderbilt conceded only the one goal; Lucy Allan was nicknamed “the dominator” by one of the tournament referees; Miah Somerton, Taylor Broughton and Grace Levy were exceptional up front; Maggie Preston, Imogen Amor-Bendall and Breanna Ferris were strong at the back; and they had a great team spirit that helped them gel on the field and dominate the competition.

Phil Allan had a great support crew that included parents with a football background and an assistant coach who had played in a World Cup finals tournament, John Hill.

The Gillies Electrical Gisborne Girls' High School Senior A netballers won all of their games. They beat Pinehurst 51-10, Rototuna 36-19, Te Aroha 60-8, Western Heights 52-25, Albany Snr 31-20, Nga Taiatea 42-20, Bethlehem 40-21 and Papamoa 37-19.

In the semifinals they beat Aquinas 35-25 and then beat Kings 26-24 in the final.

Defender Judaea Keelan-Phillips was named most valuable player (MVP) for the final, and her co-defender Joaquina Kaa and midcourter Natasha Porter were named in the C Grade tournament team.

Campion/NUAM played in the D Grade and finished seventh in the tournament.

They beat Botany Downs 26-23, Edgewater 29-20, Rangitoto 28-26, Birkenhead 27-24 and Marcellin 25-20, and lost to Howick 17-45, Alfriston 15-26 and Vanguard 21-25.
