THREE members of Tairawhiti Strength Club competed against Hawke’s Bay’s best at the weekend and came away with three wins and three second placings.

Ethan Aberahama, Tania Rauna and Andrew Randall took part in the Central Districts Powerlifting Association’s Hawke’s Bay Powerlifting Championships and Club 3 Lift in Hastings on Saturday.

Andrew Randall won the 120-kilogram masters 1 class and was placed first in the masters male category, as calculated by the Wilks formula, a method of measuring the strength of a powerlifter against other lifters taking into account their different bodyweights.

Ethan Aberahama was placed second in the 93kg sub junior class, and first sub junior male according to the Wilks formula.

Tania Rauna was placed second in the 84kg masters 1 female category and second in the master female category as calculated according to Wilks.

Tairawhiti Strength Club, formed about six months ago, offers activities that include powerlifting, weightlifting and strongman training, and sports-focused strength and conditioning training. It held its first local competition in March.

Tairawhiti Strength Club will run both in-house and Central Districts competitions in 2016 for experienced and new lifters wanting to give it a go. Classes are run throughout the week with coaching in different strength disciplines.
