GOALS from Malcolm Marfell and Josh Adams gave Gisborne Thistle a 2-1 win against Palmerston North Marist Reserves at Palmerston North on Saturday and secured the Jags third spot in football’s Central Federation League. With one game remaining — at home to Marist again, on Saturday — Thistle have 22 points, six more than Port Hill United, who beat Massey University 2-1. Team Taranaki clinched the championship with a 5-0 rout of second-placed Havelock North Wanderers.

Thistle co-coach and rightback Liam Ryan said Saturday’s performance was the side’s best this season.

“We’ve struggled to win away from home this season but we played well as a team, defended brilliantly and could have won by more. Ryan (Majstrovic, goakeeper) didn’t have a lot to do, which can be hard for keepers, but anything he had to save he dealt with comfortably. Kieran Venema and Mal Scammell played well as double centrebacks and Jake Robertson played well at leftback.

"But our man of the match was Cullen Spawforth in midfield. He was into everything, working hard on defence and getting forward to support the strikers. Jarom Brouwer also put in a big shift in midfield.”

Marfell opened the scoring after 10 minutes when he put pressure on the Marist keeper following a backpass.

“Mal took the ball off him and rolled it into the empty net,” Ryan said. “But about five minutes later, Marist were level with a shot that gave Ryan (Majstrovic) no chance. It came from a cross into the penalty area and their guy volleyed it into the net.”

Adams reclaimed the lead for Thistle in the 25th minute when he met a Nicky Land cross at the back post and headed home.

“Nicky did really well,” Ryan said. “He beat his man on the wing before delivering a perfectly weighted cross.”

Although defences were on top in the second half, Ryan said Thistle came closest to scoring and had several chances.

“Josh Adams was really unlucky not to score when he curled a free kick around the wall. It looked certain to be a goal but somehow their keeper got a fingertip to it and kept it out.”

Ryan said Kieran Higham, David Salmon and Garrett Blair came on and played well.

“Garrett was also unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. Overall, I was really pleased with the performance. The team spirit was good, and everyone supported each other, covering and working hard.”
