Some of the best quad bike riders in the country will descend on Whangara this weekend for the North Island ATV MX Championships.

Five of the six best male riders in the country and the former and current women's No.1 riders will be racing.

Organisers have been hard at work perfecting the track for what is shaping up to be an exciting weekend of racing.

Track owner and event organiser Ian Newman said this was the biggest ATV event the region has hosted.

He couldn't wait to see what the top riders in the country could do on the track, and how they like it, he said.

MX ATVs are light and durable, which encourages high-speed action.

Newman expects the quickest racers this weekend to go faster than two-wheel riders do around his track.

As of yesterday, over 35 riders had registered to race across the variety of classes.

Newman said numbers were likely to be down because of it being so close to Christmas and the Covid-19 pandemic, but with registration open up to race day, more entries were expected.

The champs are being held at Waiomoko Road at Whangara.

Entry is free to the public and racing starts at 10am tomorrow and Sunday.
