Father, son and Scotsman combined to win the Bowls Gisborne-East Coast centre open men's triples on the Gisborne Bowling Club greens.

Boon McIlroy skipped his son Adam McIlroy and former Gisborne City national league footballer Charlie Ure to victory in a five-game round-robin competition.

Each of the six teams in the men's competition played two games on the Saturday and three on the Sunday.

The Gisborne club teams were: Arthur Hawes (skip), Andrew Ball and Geoff Pinn, and Steve Goldsbury (s), Ricky Miller and Tim Sherriff.

For Te Karaka, Leighton Shanks skipped July Hoepo and Willy Murray, while Boon McIlroy skipped his son Adam and Scotsman Ure.

For Poverty Bay, Dawson Owen skipped John Andrews and Bruce Gledhill, while for Kahutia, Bruce Ball skipped Joe Wimutu and Marty Ryan.

In the first round, McIlroy's team beat Shanks's team with a plus-17 differential, Hawes beat Ball with a +8 differential and Goldsbury beat Owen with a +10 differential.

In Round 2, Shanks beat Hawes with a +2 differential, Goldsbury beat McIlroy with a +8 differential, and Ball beat Owen, also with a +8 differential.

In Round 3, Shanks beat Goldsbury with a +20 differential, while McIlroy also had a big win, with a +25 differential against Ball. Hawes beat Owen with a +8 differential.

In Round 4, Goldsbury beat Ball with a +3 differential, Shanks beat Owen with a +4 differential and McIlroy comfortably beat Hawes with a +11 differential.

In the final round, Shanks beat (Bruce) Ball with a +32 differential and McIlroy beat Owen with a +25 differential. For the last-round game against Goldsbury, the Gisborne team previously skipped by Hawes shuffled their places. Hawes played as director, Andrew Ball was skip and Pinn was lead. It worked . . . they had a good win.

McIlroy's team won the centre men's open triples with four wins, eight points and a +70 differential, and were presented with the Terry Gardiner Memorial Trophy.

Shanks's team were runners-up with four wins, eight points and a +41 differential.
