That means their sprinting — in the swim, on the bike, and running on the road — will have to be up to speed.
Reid has been in good form this year but competition for places in the New Zealand Olympic team is hot.
The mixed relay squad for Tokyo in August is Reid, Ainsley Thorpe, Nicole van der Kaay, Sophie Corbidge, Hayden Wilde and Ryan Sissons.
The athletes chosen to compete in the mixed relay will be selected after the individual race.
Reid, 22, is not part of the elite team selected to compete at the world championships in Lausanne, Switzerland, from August 29 to September 1.
He has been named in the under-23 team for that meet.
Reid is the u23 world champion and he will try to retain his title in Lausanne, something no one has done before.
Triathlon New Zealand performance manager Stephen Sheldrake said the mixed relay team had been going well.
“We are coming off an outstanding fourth place at the mixed relay world championships in Hamburg, Germany, and the team will race in Edmonton, Canada, this weekend, where we made the podium last year,” he said.
“In Tokyo, it will be our first chance to see what the course is like, with the very warm conditions we are also expecting for the Olympics.
“The squad of six athletes that have been selected for the mixed relay event in Tokyo are a young team who are getting better and better at every event.
“The exception is Ryan, who will add a lot of experience of racing. It will be his third Olympic test event, and he is keen to show everyone that he has one very good Olympics left in him.”
Reid said the team had prepared well for the key races of the season.
“I’m stoked to have been named in the squad for the world championships and Tokyo test event.
“I’m looking forward to racing on the Olympic course and helping secure selection for New Zealand’s mixed relay.”
Reid said they were based in Banyoles, Spain, for much of the time they had been in Europe this season.
“Hopefully, this has prepared us for the heat we will face in Tokyo.?”
