WAYNE Tautau retained his Gisborne Cosmopolitan Club A Grade snooker title when he beat Rip Morgan in the final last Saturday.
Twelve players contested the A Grade championship. They included B Grade players Tiny Thompson and Nathan Coombs, who acquitted themselves well and will gain from the experience.
For qualifying, the players were split into three sections of four, with games decided on the best of three frames. Those who qualified were Tautau, Morgan, Rex Kennedy, Rodney Brown, Alex Nanai, John Warren, Kevin Kennedy and John Berry.
Tautau, Nanai, Morgan and Kevin Kennedy made the semifinals, where Tautau defeated Nanai two frames to nil and Morgan defeated Kennedy 2-1. In the final, Tautau defeated Morgan two frames to one.
Te Rina Hawkins won the club’s C Grade title. Five players took part in this competition — Hawkins, John Ford, Karl Carpendale, Tracy Pearce and Dennis Jenkins.
In a round-robin competition, Hawkins came out top, with four wins. This was regarded as just reward for Hawkins, a club competition regular supporter whose snooker has improved a lot.
Another regular club tournament supporter, Ford, had three wins to be runner-up.
