EASTLAND faced an uphill fight and were jubilant to return with two wins from the second round of the inter-association super veterans’ Division 2 badminton competition in Feilding on Saturday.

They beat Hawke’s Bay 8-1 and Oroua 5-4.

Eastland team members were Ron Prebble, Linda White, Annabelle Riwaka and Ruth Ledger from the Patutahi club; Robert Cameron, Kevin Lee and Kahu Brown from the Gisborne club; and loan player Matheus Batlajeri from Manawatu.

Helen Morley was unavailable for selection.

Against Hawkes Bay, all the men’s doubles matches were close.

Cameron and Batlajeri lost their first game, showed determination to take the second 21-19, and held off their opponents to win the third game and the match.

Batlajeri and Prebble also lost their first game but turned the tables and took the match by winning the next two games.

Prebble and Cameron had another close match, winning narrowly in two games.

In the women’s doubles, Ledger and Riwaka continued their winning form from last weekend’s veterans’ ties to dominate and win in two games.

White and Brown lost their first game, changed tactics and won the second 21-18 and dominated the third game, winning 21-13.

Ledger and White lost the first game 21-14 and narrowly won the second 21-18, but in the final game were no match for determined opponents.

After the doubles, Eastland was 5-1 up.

In the mixed doubles, Cameron and Brown, Lee and Riwaka, and Prebble and White all won their matches in two games.

In the afternoon tie against Oroua, Cameron and Batlajeri played consistently to win the first men’s doubles match in two games — 21-9, 21-13.

Cameron and Prebble narrowly won their first game 21-18, but the opposition changed their game plan and took the next two games 21-17, 21-19.

Prebble and Lee held off a strong fightback to win their first game 23-21. Oroua took the next game fairly easily 21-12 but, after a settling down period, Prebble and Lee got the upper hand in the third to win 21-19 and take the match.

The women’s doubles matches were all won by Oroua.

Ledger and Brown lost in two games.

Ledger and Riwaka won the first game 21-18, but the opposition refocused to take the next two games.

White and Riwaka were no match for their Oroua opponents, losing in two games.

Going into the mixed doubles, Oroua led 4-2.

In the mixed doubles, Cameron and Brown played a tactical match, dominating and winning in two games.

Next up, Lee and Riwaka played consistently in the first game, winning 22-20, and won the second game 21-8.

The tie score stood at 4-4 as the top-pairing match started.

Prebble and White had a challenging first game but won 21-17. They dominated the second game to win 21-11 to take the game and the tie.

The super veterans’ next competition day will be in Gisborne on September 3.

Mixed: Prebble/White def Stone/Watson 21-16 21-13; Lee/Riwaka def Colgate/Barber 21-13 21-13;Cameron/Brown def Marshall/Newport 21-16 21-13.

Eastland 5 Oroua 4

Doubles — Men: Prebble/Lee def Dave Cochrane/Stuart Osbourne 23-21 12-21 21-19; Prebble/Cameron lost to Paul Crocker/Cochrane 21-18 17-21 19-21; Cameron/Batlajeri def Crocker/Steve Arathoon 21-9 21-13.

Women: White/Riwaka lost to Sue Wooddin/Anne Sutherland 12-21 13-21; Ledger/Riwaka lost to Marion Casey/Wooddin 21-18 13-21 11-21; Ledger/Brown lost to Casey/Alison Coleman 13-21 8-21.

Mixed: Prebble/White def Cochrane/Wooddin 21-17 21-11; Lee/Riwaka def Osbourne/Sutherland 22-20 21-18; Cameron/Brown def Arathoon/Pierce 21-13 21-14.
