Gisborne United retained the Eastern League division 1 title with a 5-2 win against Gisborne Boys’ High School at the Rectory field on Saturday.

Two goals to player-coach Stu Cranswick and one each to strike partner Aubrey Yates and midfielders Zane Destounis and David Glassford got the job done.

Cranswick opened the scoring two minutes into the game, running on to a through ball and placing it past the goalkeeper.

Boys’ High equalised just before halftime through Alex Larkins.

Cranswick made it 2-1 in the 53rd minute, again latching on to a through ball and finishing well.

Yates scored a headed goal from Destounis’s cross in the 60th minute for a 3-1 lead.

Destounis then headed in midfielder Jimmy Holden’s cross in the 75th minute to make it 4-1.

Boys’ High central midfielder Brad Clark scored his side’s seond goal, taking the ball from his own half and playing a one-two with a teammate before bursting into the penalty area and slotting it home from about 10m.

Glassford, not long after the kick-off from Clark’s goal, completed the scoring when he was on hand to capitalise on a ricochet in the penalty area after Holden had cut the ball across.

Cranswick said senior players Craig Christophers, Jonathan Purcell and Aaron Graham played a big part in the team’s success.

Christophers took training sessions when Cranswick could not be there and his influence as captain was considerable.

United’s main rivals for the title were Carpet Court Thistle Massive.

Before the weekend, they had two games to play, to United’s one, and were four points behind.

On Saturday, they beat Sunshine Brewery Wainui Sharks 3-0 at Childers Road Reseve.

Striker Kieran Ryan scored twice and central midfielder Dave Watson once.

Thistle Massive coach John Stirton said United deserved to win the title.

The United women made it a double celebration for the club when they won the women’s league title after beating rivals Riverina 1-0 yesterday.
