Gizzy’s Maaka makes historyPoverty Bay women’s rugby sevens player Azalleyah Maaka has been picked for the first New Zealand’s sevens team to attend the Youth Olympic Games at Buenos Aires, Argentina, from October 6 to 18.
The Gisborne Girls’ High School student is the only player from a Heartland provincial
union to have been selected.
The daughter of former Ngati Porou East Coast back Tojo Maaka and Nga Hau e Wha netball centre Ripeka Poi, Maaka was a member of the New Zealand Under-18 team who qualified for the Youth Olympics when they won the Oceania U18 Sevens Championship — contested by teams from Australia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and Tonga — at Sydney in April.
Lynn, Lamont qualifyGisborne's David Lynn and Lois Lamont have qualified for post-section play in the pairs at the National Indoor Bowls Championships in Ashburton.
Representing Gisborne Cosmopolitan Club, Lynn and Lamont had three wins from the four section games to be one of 61 pairs to advance to post-section competition.
