THE Motu Trails cycle trail could be in line for a boost to the attraction’s international appeal, following personnel changes to the Motu Trails Charitable Trust.

After more than three years as chairman of Motu Trails Charitable Trust, Dave Emslie has stepped down from the role and it will now be filled by Kathy Sheldrake of Gisborne.

Mrs Sheldrake has been a trustee for three years and until August was also on the board of The New Zealand Cycle Trail, which oversees all 23 of the Great Rides.

Mr Emslie announced his decision at the trust’s annual meeting, which also saw the departure of two other trustees.

The trust was in good shape so it was the right time for change and to move forward again, Mr Emslie said.

“It is very satisfying to have watched the evolution of the trust, in hand with the Motu Trails as a whole. Things have come a long way since we began.”

Mrs Sheldrake said it was a privilege to take over the role.

“The Motu Trails have established a significant identity in the region and nationwide. I hope we can continue to build on that to ensure the trails bring further benefit, both in the Gisborne and Opotiki districts.

“One of my goals is to look at creating package deals for New Zealand and overseas travellers alike. We need to hold folk in Gisborne or Opotiki for at least one night if not two or more.

“With our Gisborne official partners Portside and the Jolly Stockman, I am sure there are opportunities to do this on the Gisborne side of the trails. On the Opotiki side, this is already occurring.

“So much of it is about sparking off people’s imagination about what they can do here.”
