The annual Peck and Yelverton shields for junior interclub play were contested at Gisborne Bowling Club on Sunday.

Entries were down this year . . . only Gisborne and Poverty Bay bowling clubs entered their junior women's and men's teams.

However, this did not stop them from being competitive and playing some brilliant bowls throughout the one-day tournament. Both teams had to play two rounds of singles, pairs and fours.

Geoff Pinn (Gisborne) won both of his singles, 25-4 and 25-9, against Otto Louw (Poverty Bay).

Andrew Ball (skip) and Peter Clay of Gisborne won both pairs, 19-14 and 15-13, against Poverty Bay's Dawson Owen (skip) and Jerry Kora.

Gisborne's fours combination — Peter Ferris (skip), Ron Robertson, Hugh Trafford and Don Oates — won the first game 16-6 against Les Whittington (skip), BJ Seymour, John Andrews and Scott Amor but lost the second game 19-8.

With 10 points and a plus-43 differential, Gisborne Bowling Club's junior men's team won the Yelverton Shield for another year.

In the junior women, Karen Pinn (Gisborne) won both of her singles, 22-18 and 25-5 against Anna Colvin (Poverty Bay).

In the pairs, Poverty Bay's Norma Miller (skip) and Win Baker beat Gisborne's Adrienne Torrie (skip) and Joy McFarlane 14-13 in the first game. In the second round, an extra end was needed to break a 13-all deadlock, and Miller and Baker got the shots to win 16-13.

In the fours, Poverty Bay's Krystel Williams (skip), Olivia Scott, Joan Gledhill and Jean Patterson won both games, 12-10 and 13-10, against Gisborne's Diane Oates (skip), Nanette Treloar, Sally Knight and Ann Ward.

So Poverty Bay junior women's team won the Peck Shield with eight points and a minus-15 differential.

Gisborne finished with four points and a plus-15 differential.

It was a good day of bowls, and it would be great to see more junior bowls tournaments in Gisborne, which would help prepare players for competition against other juniors outside the region.
