Gisborne Boys’ High School batsman Graham Sharp was the big winner at Poverty Bay Cricket Association’s end-of-season prize-giving.

He received the Heikell Cup for player of the year, and all but one of the premier grade’s batting awards (Matt Henwood had the fastest 50).

Sharp’s season highlight came in the first games of 2021 at Nelson Park to start the Walker Shield. He blasted two centuries back to back to give his team a finals berth against OBR. Boys’ High won the final.

Over 15 innings, he scored 738 runs at an average of 61.5 and a strike rate of 125.72.

Gisborne Boys’ High School all-rounder Josiah Turner won the Chrisp Cup for best bowling average, 14.45, and shared the bowling aggregate trophy with Parminder Kulaar, of Horouta.

OBR’s Lloyd Van Zyl won the Block Hole Trophy for being the most economical bowler, finishing the season allowing just 3.34 runs an over.

The awards night capped a fascinating season of cricket that produced plenty of highs and lows.

The presence of umpiring duo Jason Trowill and Stewart Patrick was a constant in a season where it seemed anything could happen.
