Scott’s knock paves way for Sharks victory

The young man played some very good shots.

Twelve-year-old Taylor Scott struck eight fours in his 18-ball innings of 37 from No.4. It was the highest individual score in Round 1 of the Colts T15 cricket league at Nelson Park on Wednesday.

Scott's excellent knock helped the David File Decorators Old Boys Rugby Sharks put up 114-5 in their 22-run win against the DNature Dragons.

Sharks captain Ben Langford had won the toss and chosen to bat.

Seamer Akira Makiri (2-16) was the best of the Dragons' bowlers.

The Dragons reached 92-4 in their 15 overs, opener Makiri capping a fine match-effort to be his team's leading run-scorer (13) before he was bowled by Scott (1-7).

Joel Kirkpatrick (1-3) and Oliver Mackintosh (1-12) also bowled tidy medium-pace for OBR.

Such was the case in the Bollywood High School Old Boys Stars' 31-run victory over the Ngatapa Knights.

HSOB opening batsmen Connor Starck (27 runs off 22 balls) and Manjot Singh (20 off 18) and second-drop Leo Starck (25 off 18) all made solid contributions after Ngatapa skipper Aiden Armstrong won the toss and chose to bowl.

The Stars made 134-4, with promising near-medium-pace off-spinner Armstrong (1-1 off one over) the pick of the Knights' bowlers.

Batting at No.5, Gus Moylan hit four 4s in his 18-ball 25 not out for Ngatapa in one of the best knocks of the day.

For the Stars, Leo Starck (3-5 off two overs) and Arlo Willis (2-12) are promising pace bowlers who both kept a good line and length while doing a bit with the ball. HSOB restricted their opposition to 103-7.

Armstrong was impressed by Stars opening batsman Connor Starck and by two good overs with the ball by George Hume for Ngatapa.

There was an edge to Round 1.

The Tairawhiti Women's Cricket Club Hortigro Colts began this league as they intend to continue.

They beat the Bollywood High School Old Boys Pups by 16 runs.

Mel Knight was a happy coach.

“We batted sensibly and players new to Colts cricket — Joanne Wawatai, Lêane Wallace and Emmerson Brownlie — all contributed,” she said.

“Our bowling — we'd worked on minimising extras — and fielding were also better than expected.”

Pups skipper Taye McGuinness won the toss, choosing to bowl.

The TWCC made 114-3. Opener Savannah McGhee (17 retired) and her captain Grace Kuil (30no, batting at No.5) were the women's shining lights with the bat, while left-armer Caleb Taewa and fellow seamer Malsha Mahabalage both took 1-6 for the Pups.

The Pups reached 98-4 in their 15 overs. Opener Ollie Egan (17 retired), second-drop McGuinness (15 retired) and No.3 Riki Reedy (a run-a-ball 13) all continued the good form they showed for the Poverty Bay Year 7 team at Riverbend last month.

For TWCC, Alyssah Swann took 1-3, Kuil 1-3 and Wawatai 1-10.
