Sixteen teams contested the 2018 primary interschool badminton competition at the Badminton Centre last Wednesday.

A total of 66 students took part, in teams from Makauri, Te Wharau, Sonrise Christian, Waikirikiri, Muriwai and Ormond schools and Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Nga Uri a Maui.

Eight girls’ teams and eight boys’ teams, each made up of four players, played singles and doubles.

Numbers were down on last year’s entries, but organisers welcomed Ormond and Nga Uri a Maui, who attended for the first time.

The teams were exceptionally competitive, especially considering many players had not played badminton before.

The help of Phil Robinson from Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti, teachers, learning support staff, parents and Badminton Eastland volunteers was appreciated.

Congratulations go to all players. They were enthusiastic, ready to learn and try new skills, and competitive. They enjoyed their matches and showed good sportsmanship.

The winners in the boys’ competition were Makauri Weasels, from Sonrise Boys.
