A DEPLETED Gisborne Boys’ High School side went down to one of the heaviest defeats in their first-15 history when they lost 52-3 to Sacred Heart College in an interschool rugby match in Auckland yesterday.
Gisborne — who were without several key players, including skipper Naera Tipoki and lost star
midfield back Nathan Rangihuna with a rolled ankle yesterday — trailed 19-3 at halftime but were no match for a rampant Sacred Heart side in the last 35 minutes.
“The score ballooned out over the last 10 minutes,” backs coach Mark Jefferson said.
“They had some big boys and if you let big boys run and don’t tackle, they’ll run over you, which is what happened. To be fair to the boys, we had to put on some second-15 players towards the end of the game.”
Gisborne have 10 days to recover before taking on Napier Boys’ High in Napier, in their second Super 8 game.
