Conditions were testing. Many riders withdrew because of the weather and some suffered mild hypothermia.
In his gold-medal time trial event, Robinson finished 61 seconds ahead of runner-up Brian Samuels, from Tasman Wheelers.
The 66km road race did not go so well for Robinson. He finished 3 minutes 56 seconds behind the winner, John Pratt, from the Kapiti Cycling Club.
John Lowe, from Central Hawke’s Bay, was second and Robinson, third.
Robinson said he was beaten by better riders on the day. Pratt and Lowe “dealt to” him on the hills. When they saw he was struggling up the climbs, they were “off up the road”.
The 26km time trial is a favourite event for Baker, but she came up against a strong competitor in Juliann Simeonidis, from the Canterbury Time Trial Club.
Baker finished 3m 02s behind Simeonidis but 1m 15s ahead of the third-placed rider.
In the 66km road race, Baker finished third, 4m 49s behind race winner Anne Marie Guiney from Te Awamutu and 17s behind Simeonidis.
Craig Hoskin was in a field of 30 riders competing over 98km in the 50-to-54 age group. He finished in 12th place in a bunch of 14 and admitted he didn’t have his usual finishing sprint.
Peter Blake, riding in the 35-to-39 age group over 98km can be proud of his fourth-place finish. He narrowly missed out on a medal but said he was happy with his performance as he had only recently got back into cycling after time off the bike.
Other former Gisborne Cycling Club members included Lindsay File’s elder brother Wayne, who finished fifth in the 65-to-69 age group road race, and Wayne Campbell, who finished 11th in the 55-to-59 age group road race.
