SMALL teams from all three Gisborne city surf lifesaving clubs had success at the Bay of Plenty junior championships held at Papamoa Beach on Sunday.

Midway, Waikanae and Wainui were among the top-three placings in several age groups.

Jack Keepa led the Wainui effort in the under-14 boys’ division. His efforts included wins in the diamond race and surf race.

Jodiesha Kirkpatrick (Midway) picked up multiple seconds in the u12 girls’ division including the beach flags, board and diamond race won by clubmate Sophie Petro.

Jack Lepper was to the fore for Midway in the u12 boys’ division while Waikanae’s Chloe Kapene first, second and third polacings in the u11 girls’ division and Midway’s Yahni Brown had a couple of seconds in the u11 boys’ age group.

The BoP champs provided the Gisborne youngsters valuable competitive build-up towards major summer carnivals such as the Eastern Region junior champs at Ohope Beach in February and the u14 nationals at Orewa in March.

U11 girls — Beach sprint: Chloe Kapene (Waikanae) 2nd. Board race: Kapene 1st, Nicola Bronlund (Mid) 3rd. Diamond race: Kapene 2nd. Run-swim-run: Kapene 3rd.

U12 boys — Board race: Jack Lepper (Mid) 3rd. Board relay: Midway 2nd. Diamond race: Leeper 2nd.

U12 girls — Beach flags: Jodiesha Kirkpatrick (Mid) 2nd. Beach sprint: Ella Arthur (Wain) 1st. Board: Kirkpatrick 2nd, Sophie Petro (Mid) 3rd. Board relay: Midway 2nd. Diamond race: Petro 1st, Kirkpatrick 2nd. Surf race: Kirkpatrick 2nd.

U13 girls — Diamond race: Sasha Fergus (Mid) 2nd.

U14 boys — Diamond race: Jack Keepa (Wain) 1st. Run-swim-run: Keepa 2nd, Jonty Evans (Wain) 3rd. Surf race: Keepa 1st.
