“Paige is on the women’s world tour and that’s my goal — to make it one day, maybe by 2022,” said Vette.
“I’m pretty excited about going to Maroubra and hopefully I can grab a few points.”
Vette goes in on the back of impressive form at the nationals, which ended on Saturday.
She blitzed the field with a 17.67 score for her two best waves to win the under-18 girls’ final by seven points at the Stent Road break south of Oakura.
“It felt pretty good because I really wanted to win it,” said Vette. “I hadn’t won a contest in a while and to bring home the gold medal felt so good.”
She caught five waves in her 25-minute u18 final, and made the most of them in surf of up to two metres.
“My best wave was nine points out of 10. I timed it nicely and did three good turns — a cutback and a couple of re-entries.”
In the open women’s final won by Great Barrier Island surfer Aimee Brown, Vette scored 14 — 0.20 behind the winner.
“Again, I caught about five waves, and three of them were OK.
“My best wave was quite a long ride, with four or five turns, but it was really windy and it was hard to throw my board up into the lip.”
Being at the national championships was hugely enjoyable, she said.
“Good waves really make a difference. It makes the competition fairer and encourages you showcase your repertoire of moves.
“This was one of my best nationals, for sure.”
Two years ago Vette won the u16 and u18 national titles.
Her brother Finn (14) was third in the under-16 boys’ final at the weekend.
“Finn was a bit gutted he couldn’t do better. He had the chance to win the title but had a bit of a shocker in the final.”
