Poverty Bay greenkeeper William Brown joined an elite group in winning the King of the Coast men's golf open at Tolaga Bay yesterday.

Brown defeated clubmate Andrew Higham 1-up in the matchplay final, a birdie on the 18th hole sealing victory.

In winning his first KoTC crown, Brown added his name to the small list of players who have completed “the Triple Crown” of Poverty Bay-East Coast golf — KoTC, East Coast Open and Poverty Bay Open titles. Brown won the East Coast Open in 2010 and the Poverty Bay Open in 2012.

In yesterday's semifinals, Brown defeated Omanu's Liam McFarlane 5 and 4 while Higham knocked out Poverty Bay's Te Raumati “Tini” Hawea 3 and 2.
