Lee “Polly” Pollitt is never lost for words but instead of vocalising one of the more common words when it comes to foursomes golf — “sorry” — he chose another way to verbalise it. Polly created shirts for fellow Englishman Keith Daniels and himself for the Enterprise Motor Warehouse Poverty Bay men’s open foursomes. On the front was the apology when it went pear-shaped, on the back a compliment for the good stuff along with a Union Jack flag. “Sorry” outnumbered “nice one” in their first round, a 98, but “nice one” came to the fore in round 2, an 87. Poverty BayIF bouncing back from adversity is a a reflection of character, Darren Patumaka and Deevon Gray showed plenty of it in the Enterprise Motor Warehouse men’s open foursomes on Saturday . . . or perhaps they were simply beyond caring.

A disastrous opening several holes to the 36-hole strokeplay tournament saw them rack up a morning round of 95 off an 11-handicap.

The afternoon proved a different story, as Gray and Patumaka posted 78 — an improvement of 17 shots — and were rewarded with the prize for best afternoon net.

Paul Rickard and Brad Morgan’s 36-hole gross-winning performance dominated the event, but there were a few other highlights.

Steve Shields’ previous 18 holes of golf before the foursomes was on November 17 of last year.

The 35-handicapper and representative of the sponsors combined with Andy Hayward to win the 36-hole net on 139, and duly presented the trophy to himself.

Glenn Morley and Pete Stewart were joint gross leaders at the halfway stage after shooting 3-over 75 but faded to an 83 in the afternoon — good enough for 144 and third in the net.

Cliff Poole and Vance Richardson were second in the net with 142.
