Te Puia SpringsPETER Ngarimu is no one-hit wonder.

Following his September 30 club competition winning performance, Ngarimu went even better last Sunday and was rewarded with twice the success.

Ngarimu won the men’s stableford with 75-18-57, for 45 points, and beat Jim Devery in their Makarika Cup matchplay clash.

Robyn Ngatai and Makita Puke won the women’s hidden partners stableford with 76 points.

Tolaga BayONE stroke separated the top two in the Bon Irving Rosebowl mixed pairs on Sunday.

It was even closer in the Captain’s Trophy.

Thelma Waru and John Hale won the Rosebowl with a 27-hole net 100, with Ginger Watts and Dan Maitai second on 101.

The order was reversed in the Captain’s Trophy 18-hole net, Watts and Maitai winning on countback after both pairs totalled 37 points.

PatutahiHAMISH Harris gave a Friday warning of what was to come on Sunday.

Harris followed up a 22-point haul in the Friday meat pack nine-hole stableford with a handsome victory in the junior men’s net on Sunday.

He shot 83-24-59 for a four-stroke win.

An eagle-2 on the 327-metre 17th hole highlighted Brian Wallace’s win in the senior men’s section. He carded 78-15-63.

You could have cooked a steak on the scoring in the junior division of Friday’s meat pack stableford.

Dave Tarry, thanks to 39 off the stick, won with 26 points on countback from Ian Tietjen.

Gisborne ParkBrad Reynonds had 34 on one nine and 34 on the other over the weekend.

If only he’d done it on the same day.

Reynolds won the men’s stableford on Sunday with 75-11-64, for 44 points. He was 3-under after four holes, went out in 2-under 34 and came home in 41.

Reynolds’ Saturday round of 78 was the reverse. He went out in 44 and charged back in 34, including an eagle-3 on the 13th and birdies on 12 and 16.

His efforts, however, weren’t enough to win. Mike Hutton took the honours with his first sub-100 score (98) in over 30 rounds dating back to July.

Poverty BayA front nine holes of 3-under par 33 was the feature of Stefan Andreassen’s men’s gross-winning round in the BMS and 22 Above open tournament on Sunday.

Andreassen showed up many of the district’s top players with his 1-under par 71.

Paul Rickard has taken a while to get used to new clubs but has come good with a vengeance. He won the men’s overall net with 66 while Marc Armstrong’s 42 points earned him the men’s stableford honours.

In the women’s division, Rochelle Taewa christened new clubs by winning the women’s gross with 86, Debbie Kirkpatrick (69) won the net and June MacKinnon (41) the stableford.

Patutahi member Mana Pohatu produced the shot of the day, sinking his second on the 10th for an eagle-2.

Warwick Thompson enjoyed his weekend of golf. He ran away with the division 2 men’s stableford on Saturday with 86-25-61, for 47 points, and followed it up the next day with a men’s division 3-winning 41 points.

Gay Young remains the DJ Barry Jug holder although this time with a different partner.

Young and Basil Payne won the South African net medal mixed pairs title, totalling 546 for their best two of three rounds.

They were well clear of MJ Bloem and Don McFadyen (580), Bloem’s efforts featuring a career-best-equalling 81 off the stick in round 2.

SeniorsGISBORNE Park’s Neal Jones was the big winner but all 20 players who took part in the Gisborne East Coast veterans’ trip to Tolaga Bay this week had a great day out.

Tolaga Bay stalwart vet Joe Lincoln promised glorious Coast weather and the gods delivered.

Jones won with 41 points, with clubmate Barry Cox and Poverty Bay’s Glenn Burnside on 40.

A delicious pre-game buffet prepared by Thelma Waru was followed post-play by a superb barbecue meal — Coast hospitality at its finest.

The next vets’ event is the major tournament of the year — the Sean Shivnan Pharmacy men’s and women’s open at Poverty Bay next month.

The men (55 years and over) have a strokeplay round on Sunday, November 4, followed by matchplay in seeded groups of eight from the Monday to Wednesday.

The women (50 years and over) have strokeplay rounds from Monday to Wednesday. Players can enter for all three rounds or pick and choose what day they want to play. There will also be a nine-hole option.

Those yet to enter are urged to do so as the field is filling fast including an excellent response from outside the district.
