Poverty BayPARAMEDIC Marc Armstrong hopes the two defibrillators recently bought by the golf club will never have to be used.

But he can be sure there will be a few heart palpitations in his and John Pittar’s Barns-Graham Cup men’s campaign, which got off to the perfect start on Saturday.

Armstrong and Pittar top qualified for the popular men’s pairs competition with a four-ball best-ball stableford total of 48 points.

They were three shots clear of Andy Hayward and Mark Stewart, with two pairs a point back on 44 points — Glen Burnside and Tene Goldsmith, and Mark Norman and Dave Jenkins.

The talking point of the 19th was 2017 champions Paul Mullooly and Neil Mackie’s failure to negotiate the first hurdle. The pair could manage only 36 points — not enough to make the top 32.

No.1 seeds Armstrong and Pittar face a potentially tricky matchplay opener on Saturday in two-time winners Roy Skuse and Bill Allen.

Gay Young and Basil Payne had to settle for second in the Captain’s Cup mixed pairs . . . but not in the Toogood Jugs.

The Young/Payne combo won the combined stableford title with a 75-point total.

Young anchored it with 87-18-69, for 41 points, while Payne had 35.

Janice Bell and Colin Christie were second on 69.

Anaru Reedy put the pain of a couple of late lapses behind him with a sublime 6-under 66 on Sunday.

Two Fridays ago, Reedy was 4-under with three holes to play only to finish double bogey-double bogey-bogey for 73.

Two days later he needed to sink a 3-foot putt on the 18th to win the Sunday School jackpot of $200 for scoring two stableford points or more on each hole . . . only to miss.

There were no mistakes on Sunday as Reedy completed a flawless 18 holes of 66-1-65, for 43 points, to win the division 1 men’s stableford and the SS jackpot.
