Te Puia SpringsIT wasn’t William Brown’s sub-par round.

Or the Cook’s Courier stableford double.

It wasn’t the home-course treble in the women’s competition.

Or Te Puia Springs triumphing over Tolaga Bay in their interclub challenge.

The highlight of the Hikurangi Foodmarket Te Puia Springs Christmas tournament on Sunday was “he tangata, he tangata, he tangata” . . . “it is people, it is people, it is people”.

Eighty-five of them — 58 men, 27 women — turned up for the festive occasion, the biggest turnout “for years”, according to the locals.

It had the 19th hole “pumping”, an atmosphere enhanced by the always top-notch Springs after-play feast and a mouth-watering prize table of hams and pork.

Brown was among those to collect from the top table for his men’s gross-winning 1-under 65.

The Cooks — Dick and wife Aomihi — had matching stableford victories. Dick’s 42 points topped the men and Aomihi’s 39 the women.

Aomihi was part of a Springs dominance of the women’s section, Georgina Roberts (81) winning the gross and Robyn Ngatai (64) the net.

Te Puia also earned bragging rights over neighbours Tolaga Bay in their annual interclub challenge.

The TPS women averaged 34.6 points to TB’s 33.5.

The men beat their Tolaga counterparts 32.45 to 32.25 – a few missed putts probably the difference.

Gisborne ParkREBECCA Walford will blame her high handicap but she still put together the top round of scintillating scoring at the Park last week.

One of Park’s top players of the past, Walford turned in 89-27-62, for a haul of 47 points, in winning the women’s stableford on Sunday.

Her best round of the year included a two on the seventh hole.

A couple of weeks ago, Zane Boyle posted a personal best 75 off the stick.

He carved three strokes off that in winning the men’s stableford on Sunday with even-par 72-7-65, for 43 points.

Tracey Ford was also in fine weekend form. She won the women’s stableford on Saturday with 88-24-64, including a two, for 45 points. It was her lowest score since March of last year.

Evan and Evan filled the top two spots in the men’s stableford on Saturday — Evan Parkin winning with 42 and Evan Morley second on 37.

Glen McKinnon also impressed with his 42 points on Sunday but had to settle for runner-up behind Boyle.

PatutahiMATEROA Philip played “good cop, bad cop” in the women’s stableford on Tuesday and it ended in her best round of the year.

The “bad cop” came in the form of a front-nine 51, the “good cop” a back-nine 41 in her 92-29-63, for 44 points.

It overshadowed Shelley Robertson’s runner-up effort of 85-18-67, for 41 points, thanks largely to a back nine 39 to go with a 46.

Selwyn Pohatu’s purple patch continued. He won the senior men’s stableford on Saturday with 75-12-63, for 42 points, pipping Ashley Hindmarsh.

Dave Maloy won the junior section with 42, on countback from Mike de Luze, and Helen Pomana’s 38 topped the women.

Poverty BayPOVERTY Bay men’s open champion Pete Anderson added another highlight to his excellent year — a career-low round in Sunday’s competition.

Anderson had five birdies and a single bogey — on the par-5 fifth hole — in his 4-under 68.

It earned him the division 1 men’s stableford honours with 43 points although it was not good enough to win his Sunday School four-ball match.

Anderson’s round drew high praise but probably the most talked-about performance of Sunday came from Lee “Pikey” Hewson.

Following a practice session on Saturday, Pikey proceeded to have an air-shot off the first tee in front of most of the Sunday School crew.

He had no points in the first two holes, then came alive to score 38 points over the next 16 including the only two of the “School”.

“You can pay for your whisky (the traditional whisky shout for having an air-shot),” said a playing partner as Pikey lined up his putt for two on the sixth. He sank it and it earned him a cool $90.

Add to that the $35 he collected as part of the best overall team net, and Pikey’s wallet was bulging.

The air-shot — his second in the past three weeks — was banished to history.

The men’s jackpot of two twos was struck all three competition days over the week — Clive Dean on Thursday, Andy Hayward on Saturday and Peter Kerekere on Sunday.

Other men’s comp winners were Keith Daniels (40pts) on Sunday, Frank Ball (40) and Colin Christie (42) on Saturday, and Tuki Sweeney (39) and John Aitchison (40) on Thursday.
