HIGHLIGHTS were spread over three games in local hockey at the weekend.

GMC Kowhai and YMP B drew 1-1, Ngatapa beat Gisborne Girls' High School 4-2 and Waituhi beat Gisborne Boys' High School 2-1 on the Hain Farming Turf.

Kowhai led almost all the way, only for YMP B to snatch a goal and the draw in the last few minutes of their clash.

“It was a well-fought contest,” Poverty Bay Hockey operations manager Louise Teneti said.

“Both teams were missing key players so that evened things up a bit.

“They are both fairly young teams too, and they had a good strong game.”

Four players shared the goals for Ngatapa in their 4-2 win against Amber Dental Gisborne Girls' High School.

Girls' High were without five players from their regular line-up but the team played well and made Ngatapa work hard for the result, Teneti said.

The men's match of the weekend lived up to expectations. A hard-fought game between Boys' High and Waituhi ended with Waituhi 2-1 ahead.

“That was always going to be the game of the round for the men, and that's how it turned out,” Teneti said.

“It was a good strong game from both teams.

“The students are developing nicely as they head towards their main goal of doing well in the Super 8 secondary schools competition.”

Courtney Onekawa scored 10 goals as YMP A thumped brave Te Aowera 24-0.

Mel Knight scored four, Kodi Campbell, three, and Dannell Tuhou, two. Five other YMP women scored a goal each.

“Well done, Te Aowera, for keeping on playing right to the end despite the big scoreline,” Teneti said.

Two of the men's games were defaulted but the teams played “friendlies”.
