RUBI Perano and Uenuku Kohatu won the junior girls’ and boys’ titles at Badminton Eastland’s junior tournament held in the Badminton Centre at the weekend.

It was the second year running that Rubi had won this title.

A field of 48 junior players from Tolaga Bay and Badminton Eastland clubs took part. Enthusiasm and good sportsmanship were features as over a hundred matches were played.

This was the first competition for many players and the improvement in play during the day was terrific.

Many matches were close, particularly as players moved to semifinals and finals.

Players were keen to umpire matches, and these skills also developed during the day.

Organisers were pleased with the response but disappointed with the number of volunteers to run the event.

Columbine Hosiery and Westpac provided prizes; parents, caregivers and teachers brought children to the venue and supported them. A group of Uawa supporters ran the kitchen as a fundraiser to cover costs of transport so their players could take part in weekly Eastland Badminton competition.
