GOLF

WAIROA are the 2021 Poverty Bay women’s pennants champions after a series that was in the balance to the final round.

The seven-round series came to a fittingly tight conclusion at Electrinet Park on Saturday.

Four clubs went into the round, held in conjunction with the Fletcher’s Meat Treat open tournament, in the hunt for overall honours.

The pennants points format was the best five of seven rounds, with the last round having to count among those.

At the end of a tough day on a heavy Park course, Wairoa emerged the champions but it could not have been much closer.

They finished second on the day but the team points they got for that were enough to clinch the overall title.

Wairoa totalled 31 points, one ahead of Round 7 winners Waikohu, with Mahia only a point back in third.
