HOCKEY

POVERTY Bay are into the last eight of their national under-15 girls’ hockey tournament in Carterton.

The Bay team topped the standings in their pool, thanks to a 46th-minute penalty-stroke goal to Kelsey Teneti against Wanganui in their final pool game.

The clash ended 1-1 and the sides both finished on seven points, but Poverty Bay clinched first place through a superior goal differential — 17 to Wanganui’s 14. It booked them a quarterfinal today against Wellington.

The Bay side powered their way through their earlier pool games — crushing Wairarapa 8-1 and Manawatu 10-0.
