ONE DOOR SHUTS, ANOTHER OPENS: Maz Quinn was knocked out of contention in the open men’s division, which he has won four times, at the national surfing championships. So the 41-year-old went out and did the next best thing . . . won the over-40s final with the second-highest heat total of the week-long competition, 17.87 out of 20 for his two best waves at Makorori Beach. Quinn won his first nationals title — the under-16s division — in 1992 at Gisborne.
