JUNIOR indoor bowlers Olivia Barnard and Rachael Rickard were among the award-winners at the Waerenga a Hika Indoor Bowling Club’s final club-night of the year.

In the annual prize-giving held after the evening’s games, eight-year-old Olivia was named the most improved player of the year, and 10-year-old Rachael received the Junior Encouragement Award for her continued improvement at the sport.

Olivia has been playing off and on over the past two years, but for the past six months she has played in club evenings with her grandfather Kevin Fishburn, a regular bowler at the club.

He — and the other club members — have encouraged Olivia in her efforts and she has improved remarkably in the past six months. She can now give some of the more experienced club members a run for their money.

Rachael has been playing indoor bowls with her father, Andrew Rickard, for the past 18 months. However, in the past few months, when she has attended club evenings more regularly, she has shown marked improvement.

Olivia and Rachael are proving to be assets for the future of the club and the sport. Their awards are a credit to them and to those who have helped them in the sport.
